Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Washington

A pause from art to remember my crazy little two toothed, red-headed, green eyed, chatty friend; Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Washington. This one loved me more than I knew an animal could & I adored her. Mrs. Washington, may there be an endless supply of heads for you to wrap your body around, foreheads for you to rest your chin on, noses for love bites, necks for kneading, bags to play with, boxes to nap in, sun to bask in, expensive blankets to sleep on, odd containers (fish bowls included) to drink water from & people to meow at & cuddle you, where ever you are.  You made my world so much better &  home doesn't really feel like home without you. Rest in peace, my little lady.

Week 2 & 3

14/A/Week

Fall is,  by far, my favorite season. I feel reinvigorated from crisp air, chunky sweaters & pumpkin spice coffee.

To get myself back on track, I'm creating 14 drawings a week. It is far too easy to find excuses with work & life, so these will be rough sketches, textures, illustrations- anything that my little hands feel like putting on paper. The following week they will be scanned/overlapped/manipulated. The week after? Repeat.

A taste of the first round....

Mural

This rainy Saturday was spent with my good friend Jenn painting a mural at Domas Academy in Connecticut. As the afternoon passed, we were in slight dismay that there is no way around how much time big walls take to cover. Below is stage one. It still has a ways to go & elements that haven't been added, but we're happy with the start!

Sketchbook

Summer always initiates art kicks. The sun has me spending every extra moment in my garden; the extra daylight lends more incentive to productivity after work.

Catching up...

Nothing like a long vacation to revamp a blog & get back on the interweb! Contrary to my missing blog presence, I have been keeping a little too busy & not busy enough all at once:

1. WORK: I'm super excited about the new Spring 11 line for JOHN ROBSHAW TEXTILES! (Sneak peak of the catalogue here). This season is full of strong designs that bring back the aesthetics of broken block prints & softer colors that I've fallen in love with. Between bedding, kurtas, scarves, duffle bags & stationary, I can't decide what my favorite part of the line is. I may be biased because this is what I look at every day, but even if I wasn't, I'd still clearly be crunching numbers of whatever paycheck was coming my way to figure out how this could be in my life.

2. PAINT: I had the honor of taking on two commissions for what I hope were memorable Christmas presents for these folks! One of a beautiful house in Melrose, Massachusetts, the other a portrait of two pretty adorable, charismatic kids. In return, they've drawn some pretty amazing pieces that will go on my fridge once I am able to escape the Boston blizzard & make it back to Astoria!

4. CARVE: My uncle, who is pretty amazing with wood & carving tools, gave me a widdling/relief carving lesson. I'm anxious to build a work station in my apartment, but I may be getting ahead of myself. For now, I had a bit of help on this flower relief carving while learning the basics of tools & woodgrain.

6. READ: Just finished Climbing High (1986 Mt Everest expedition), almost through with Days of the Endless Corvette (indulgent vacation read) & An Object of Beauty is on the shelf ready to go next...

7. ART: Finally made it around the new wings of the Museum of Fine Arts. An amazing Richard Avedon photo exhibit is up & I'm always surprised at how long I linger in front of John Singer Sargent's works....

8. ON THE RADAR: I'm slightly behind & now eager to check out the Houdini exhibit at the Jewish Museum! Saturday, please come quickly!

Here's to a new year, fresh inspiration & more art!

It's already off to a great start.

Happy New Year!
